You are bidding on the exact vintage felt pennant that you see in the photos. We are not experts or collectors so please see all of the photos and consider them a part of the description.
This original felt pennant is an Original Princeton college, large version and is very hard to find. We believe this to be from the 1930's. Really nice example of this pennant.
This item will come in the hard plastic sleeve that you see it in, in the photo. It has the white letters that are sewn on. There is no manufacturers tag on this one but we believe it is an original Felt Crafters Pennant because it was purchsed from the same collection and has the same materials, appearance, and age as the otehr pennants we have listed.
there is a white tag on the back with the name "GUS HICKOK" on it. This was purchased from the estate of a serious collector, historian, and restorer of barns and buildings and his name was william hickock but I believe his nick name was gus.
in my opinion this is a very nice piece with minimal wear. the threading appears to be good and in tact and i don't see any loose letters or anything. the outside edges of the pennant appear to be undamaged as you can see in the photos. The tassels are good with the one having a little missing piece as you can see in the photos.
just a really neat piece that we were happy to save and bring to the public!! we will be listing several other banners and pennants from this same estate over the next week or so.
Here is some information on the company as per the internet:
Felt pennants have been around for a good long time and are now highly collectible!! The Felt Crafters being the original name that later became Keezer Mfg. Co. was at one time overlooked in the collectors circle. However due to the low production numbers and quality of these felt pennants, they are now a sought after and welcomed addition to any pennant collection.
The company records show, the business officially began operations in 1928 in Danville and would, a short time later, move to Plaistow. In fact, it was actually located in the basement of George and Sadie’s home, the parents of C.D. Keezer. It is thought that this basement where their son, C.D. Keezer learned to make his first pennants. He was only 19 years old at this time being a sophomore in college. It is said that his first pennants were probably Northeastern pennants since he was a Northeastern student at the time which would probably make his first patrons his fellow students!
His business got a bit more serious by the early 1930s, after graduating from college. C.D. moved his operation out of his family’s home to a building in nearby Plaistow, NH which is what his earliest tags are marked. This is also when he names his company “The Felt Crafters” and started to mark his products as such. This new location, for the next two decades, was his company’s home at the corner of Main St. and Spinney Ave. These early pennants were a combination of sewn on letters and screen printed and he was known for sewing on 2 pair of tassels, even on most of his smaller pennants which was pretty unusual. C.D.’s company not only made pennants for colleges all across the country, but also for fraternal orders, clubs, and summer camps all throughout New England.
In the late 1940’s, Felt Crafters needed to expand on a massive scale due to doing very well making mostly their collegiate pennants and an expanding product line! In an answer to these growth issues, C.D. purchased land that was a part of the old Dobbins-Colcord Shoe Factory in 1948. This property was located at 200 Lasknit Avenue in Plaistow. It was at this time that C.D. made a major change…he renamed his company: “Keezer Mfg. Co.”. This decision came upon the realization that the name ‘The Felt Crafters” which had served him so well for over 2 decades, limited peoples ideas of what they made and the company was adding new directions such as apparel.
Unfortunately, President and Founder, C.D. Keezer, passed away at the early age of 66. He was running Keezer right up until the day that he passed away. His youngest son, being his name sake, Carter Dimond Keezer, II, had served as Vice President of the company and was poised to take over one day, unfortunately passed away of a long illness at the early age of 24, six years prior to his fathers passing. C.D.’s daughter, Joan Keezer stepped up to run her father’s company. Due to licensing issues with apparel and such items and the dwindling popularity of felt pennants, Joan dissolved the Keezer Mfg. Co. in 1985 putting a sad end to such a great company
